The Linda Lindas: In It Together

Interview The Linda Lindas: In It Together
Armed with undimmed curiosity and an ever-rebellious spirit, on third album ‘Gotta Get Out’, punk-rock prodigies The Linda Lindas have even more to get off their chests.
The Linda Lindas are growing up. The LA band that first boomed to notoriety when its members were still in school are older now, informed by years of touring with powerful names - and, what’s more, they’re determined to keep evolving. The quartet’s third album, ‘GOTTA GET OUT’, isn’t a record characterised by the predictable ‘good for their age’ comments they were initially met with; instead, this is a record of genuine evolution, informed by bona fide musical knowledge and a few grown up conversations.
For the first time, here, the band decided to try and write as a collective. “When you write a song on your own, you can end up feeling unsure whether it should come to the band or not, because it’s not ‘Linda Lindas sounding enough’ or whatever,” guitarist Lucia de la Garza says, speaking via video call. They soon realised that, perhaps, this trepidation was limiting them, concluding now that “if you write a song with your bandmates and you’re The Linda Lindas, any song that you write is a Linda Lindas song.”
And so, as the band - completed by bassist Eloise Wong, drummer Mila de la Garza, and guitarist Bela Salazar - began playing around with synths and dabbling in funk, The Linda Lindas’ third album became a bigger, more exciting, broader beast. “We’ve been doing music together for so long at this point that we trust each other’s musical tastes and instincts - if someone throws out an idea, we’re going to try it, even if it may be something that we’ve never done before,” Eloise adds, exemplifying the benefit of being in a band with her life-long best friends.
“We don’t intentionally rebel in trying new things with our music,” Lucia caveats; although it was 2021’s breakout single ‘Racist, Sexist Boy’ which first put the band on the map, their outlook is far from contrived. “We have a lot of fun trying new things,” she continues, “so it comes from a place of curiosity, not rebellion, when we’re making a whole new sound for our album.”
“It’s important not to lose hope, not to give up, and to not look away.”
— Eloise Wong
What does come from a place of rebellion, though, is the outright rage that can be heard across ‘GOTTA GET OUT’. Expressed best on battle cry single ‘Blood On Our Hands’, the quartet’s political commentary levels up once more into straight-staring, plain-speaking protest. “We write about what we’re feeling [and] what’s going on in our lives, and a lot of the time that’s a mixture of anger and sadness and loneliness, which has to do a lot with the messed up state of the world and the messed up system that we’re living in right now,” Lucia says simply.
It’s a vital distillation of their rightful passion - and more importantly, of their refusal to look away. “A lot of times, convenience and business is put before the health of our planet and the health of the people that live on it, and ultimately we all live on the same planet, and it affects us all,” explains Eloise. “Maybe the people who are making these decisions aren’t the first ones affected, but it’s a home we all share, so we all gotta take care of it, you know?
“That’s what’s great about being able to use music as a platform to sing about these things,” she adds, “because when we play live, we can be in a room full of people who will sing along to the same lyrics. That sense of community is so important right now because it’s just important not to lose hope, not to give up, and to not look away from things that affect us and people that we love.” Right on.
